The Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery as well as those that perform well and help surgeons and hospitals continue to improve the patients’ quality of life and safety of care provided. “The Center of Excellence certification recognizes both the quality of my skills as a surgeon and the quality of the bariatric services offered at Foothills Weight Loss Specialists,” said Ray. “It is an honor to receive this designation, and I am proud to share this news, especially with our patients.” To earn the Center of Excellence designation, Ray underwent a series of site inspections during which surgical processes were examined and data on health outcomes was collected. With his certification, Ray joins his practicing partner at Foothills Weight Loss Specialists, Dr. Mark Colquitt, who earned the honor in 2006. As part of the designation process, both Ray and Colquitt agree to continue to share information on clinical pathways, protocols and outcomes data with other Center of Excellence programs and physicians. Ray and Colquitt began performing the gastric bypass procedure at Blount Memorial Hospital in December 2002, and added the Lap-Band option in December 2004. The practice now also offers the gastric sleeve and Realize band as additional surgical weight loss tools. Located in Maryville, Tenn., Foothills Weight Loss Specialists offers both surgical as well as non-surgical weight loss solutions from highly trained board-certified surgeons. It has been designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
